Xavier offers a Study abroad scholarship. Any Xavier student can apply but priority is given to applicants who have not previously received the scholarship.

Study Abroad Scholarships 

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship: The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship offers invaluable opportunities for students to pursue their academic goals through international study. This scholarship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, aims to diversify the kinds of students who study and intern abroad and the countries and regions where they go. 

What is the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship? 

The Gilman Scholarship provides funding for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide. This prestigious scholarship aims to support students from diverse backgrounds who have traditionally been underrepresented in study abroad programs, including but not limited to students with high financial need, students in underrepresented fields such as STEM, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities. 

Criteria for Application 

  • Eligibility: To be eligible for the Gilman Scholarship, applicants must be U.S. citizens who are undergraduate students in good academic standing at an accredited institution of higher education in the United States. 
  • Federal Pell Grant Recipients: Applicants must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the term of their study abroad program or internship. 
  • Program Selection: Applicants must be applying to or have been accepted into a credit-bearing study abroad program or internship eligible for credit at their home institution. The program must be at least 21 consecutive days in one country, and eligible programs must be located in a country that is not currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory Level 3 or Level. 
  • Purpose of Study: Applicants should demonstrate a strong commitment to academic and career goals, as well as a clear connection between their proposed study abroad program or internship and their academic and professional objectives. 
  • Diversity and Inclusion: The Gilman Scholarship places a strong emphasis on supporting students from diverse backgrounds, including but not limited to students with high financial need, students in underrepresented fields such as STEM, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities. 

Application Process 

  1. 1. Online Application: Applicants must complete and submit an online application through the Gilman Scholarship website.
  2. Essay: Applicants must submit two essays – a Statement of Purpose essay and a Community Impact essay – outlining their academic and career goals, the significance of their chosen study abroad program or internship, and how they plan to share their experiences with their home communities.
  3. Transcript:Applicants must submit their current transcript from their home institution.
  4. Advisor Certification: Applicants must have their study abroad or internship advisor certify their application.
  5. Financial Aid Certification: Applicants must have a financial aid advisor certify their application to confirm their Pell Grant eligibility.

Deadline

The application deadline for the Gilman Scholarship typically falls in early March for fall and academic year programs and in early October for spring programs.
